Third Conference on Frontiers of Aberration Corrected Electron Microscopy in Kasteel Vaalsbroek from 19 to 23 April 2015
PICO 2015, the third Conference on Frontiers of Aberration Corrected Electron Microscopy, took place at Kasteel Vaalsbroek between the 19th and the 23rd of April 2015. The meeting was attended by more than 150 delegates including company representatives and a good number of international colleagues. Organisers put together an oral programme of 44 scientific keynote lectures. About the same number of contributions were scheduled for poster presentations.
The event, which was jointly organised by the Ernst Ruska-Centre, was supported by the German Research Foundation, FEI Company, JEOL Ltd, CEOS GmbH, Nion Inc, DENSsolutions, Hitachi Inc, Gatan GmbH, EA Fischione Instruments, and HREM Research Inc.
The scientific programme of PICO 2015 contained an wide range of oral and poster presentations focusing on recent advances in methods and applications for the study of structural and electronic properties of solids by the application of advanced electron microscopy techniques. Topical issues of aberration corrected electron microscopy research were highlighted in keynote presentations given by leading invited experts.
Speakers included Les Allen (Melbourne), Juri Barthel (Jülich), Philip Batson (Piscataway), Pascale Bayle-Guilleaud (Grenoble), David Bell (Harvard), Nigel Browning (Richland), Ulrich Dahmen (Berkeley (US)), Christian Dwyer (Jülich), Werner Grogger (Graz), Max Haider (Heidelberg), Lothar Houben (Jülich), Florent Houdellier (Toulouse), Archie Howie (Cambridge), Martin Hÿtch (Toulouse), Yuichi Ikuhara (Tokyo), Chunlin Jia (Jülich), Jörg Jinschek (Eindhoven), Ute Kaiser (Ulm), Mathieu Kociak (Paris), Helmut Kohl (Münster), Michael Lehmann (Berlin), Axel Lubk (Dresden), Jannik Meyer (Vienna), Peter Nellist (Oxford), Steven Pennycook (Knoxville), Velimir Radmilovic (Belgrade), Quentin Ramasse (Daresbury), Harald Rose (Ulm), Frances Ross (Yorktown Heights), Hidetaka Sawada (Tokyo), Owen Saxton (Cambridge), Peter Schattschneider (Vienna), Rasmus Schröder (Heidelberg), David Smith (Tempe), Sejii Takeda (Osaka), Nobuo Tanaka (Tokyo), Toshiaki Tanigaki (Japan), Ruud Tromp (Yorktown Heights), Stephan Uhlemann (Heidelberg), Sandra Van Aert (Antwerp), Dirk Van Dyck (Antwerp), Jo Verbeeck (Antwerp), Nestor Zaluzec (Argonne), and Yimei Zhu (Upton).
One of the highlights of the meeting was a symposium held to honour the scientific careers of Harald Rose on the occasion of his 80th birthday in 2015. Superb dinner speeches were given by Ulrich Dahmen, Max Haider, Archie Howie, Helmut Kohl, and Nestor Zalzuec. PICO 2015 organisers are grateful to all those who shared their scientific results and contributed to the lively atmosphere of the sessions as well as the social events.
Conference proceedings have been published in as Volume 151 (2015) in a special issue of Ultramicroscopy. The fourth Conference on Frontiers of Aberration Corrected Electron Microscopy, PICO 2017, is scheduled to take place again in Kasteel Vaalsbroek and will be held from 30th April to 4th May 2017.
